EBH 2014: Duke Dumont Tells Slater Touring America Is Easier Than Europe

Before Duke Dumont stopped in backstage at 103.3 AMP Radio’s Electric Bounce House to chat with us, Slater wanted to make sure he was Ebola-free. Upon scanning Duke with some sort of device, Slater deemed it clear to begin the interview with Dumont just before he took the stage at the Tsongas Center in Lowell.

Duke is just starting to become a household name in mainstream American music culture and Slater wanted to know what the last year has been like for this rising star of EDM.

“It’s been a few hit records in the U.K., and its starting to cross-over to the U.S., and it’s artists like myself and Disclosure who represent a slightly different sound to what mainstream dance music might represent in America, so we offer an alternative. But it’s starting to pick up in the States,” Duke tells Slater. “I’m enjoying touring America, touring America is easier than touring Europe.”

Dumont has played Coachella and Lollapalooza, among hundreds of other shows all over the North American continent. What’s his favorite part about the whole experience so far?

“The fact that it’s well-received. it’s nice that you’re not getting booed – yet,” Duke laughs. “My biggest thing is if the crowd can sing back the record to you, that’s a good sign. It’s not often – not many people have that, so it’s a nice feeling when that happens.”

Duke also talks about getting his start remixing pop songs and the fact that he is now fortunate to be recognized for his own original work. Slater touches on the creativity in Dumont’s music videos and how some of the scenes are so outrageous, he should release a blooper reel.
